A Maharashtrian wedding is rich in customs and traditions but simple in merriment. More attention is paid to the religious practices and bridal attire than to any other element in the wedding.
Bridal Attire
The Maharashtrian bride is adorned with a nine yard saree called a navaree. This can be a heavily embellished Paithani saree or any other silk variety. It is typical to wear a Kanjeevaram silk saree on this day as
well.
The saree must be rich in both design and color. The draping of the saree is also quite different than a regular saree, usually done in a Maharashtrian drape. This saree is in a deep green color with a gold border. Green is considered as an auspicious color which also symbolizes fertility and prosperity. In terms of accessories, the bride wears her hair up in a bun and decorates it with flowers usually mogra, also called gajra. Maharashtrians believe that a fully adorned bride is the avatar of goddess Parvati.
Groom’s Attire
The groom is dressed in a traditional dhoti kurta, usually in white color or some other neutral shade. He also wraps a stole around his neck that has thin gold border around it. To complete his
look, a Nehru cap is placed on his head.
Wedding Accessories
A Maharashtrian wedding is incomplete without jewellery for the couple. The bride typically wears jewellery designs that is reminiscent of the Maratha Peshwa dynasty. These ornaments include
items such as rudraksha mala, karwari nath, Lakshmi haar, moongachi maala, gold bangles and the ambada or bun pin. She might also wear a set of silver or gold payals. Most of these jewellery
pieces are made in the city of Kohlapur, located in Western Maharashtra.
Unlike grooms in other Hindu traditions, the Maharashtrian groom also wears jewellery. He typically wears pearl beads around the neck and a gold ring.
Both the bride and groom complete their wedding attire with traditional Indian footwear such as jootis and mojris.
A Marathi wedding is simple in celebration but rich in tradition, ritual and attire.
